Bring on “The Block” ~ our home renovation iso projects!

ISOLATION PROJECT 1 …

I don’t know about anyone else but when everything began shutting down we had LOADS of time with not much to do.  Work had all but dried up and well, no work meant no money! Top that off with social distancing and a sudden leap to Level 3 restrictions and we were basically living life at home 24/7.

Anyway, we have a nice home.  It’s definitely comfortable and certainly big enough for the 6 of us.  Here’s the thing though … we didn’t build it so it wasn’t entirely our style.  Who’s feeling me?  It’s nice enough … don’t get me wrong but we’re not really brown earthy kinda people and let’s just say the previous owners, well, they were.

We’d already had our kitchen renovated (we used the beautiful Chris & Jenna from Kitchens by CJ for that one) and we’d already done our alfresco area and pool, as well as the best kids cubby house ever … I’ll post about it one of these days actually … which really just left our bathrooms and laundry!  Side note, we have had our kids bedroom wardrobes all updated by CJ as well so really, we legit just had the laundry and bathrooms to do.

Needless to say Clayton is pretty handy but he’s never tiled before … but hey, might as well have a crack, eh!  There’s always Google and YouTube if it’s hard, right?

We decided it might be smartest if we start small, you know, and work our way up … so we started with the kids upstairs toilet.  We figured if it look like “shit” – pardon the pun – then no one would really see it as it’s really only upstairs for the kids!  Smart cookies, huh?

So, here it is – the “before” … I’m hopeless at remembering “before” photos but I’m sure you’ll get the gist.  Just plain and boring with not much style at all.

First things first, I tried to find some inspiration by Googling … not “bathrooms” as it’s literally just a room with a toilet … that’s it!  I tried “powder rooms” and “water closets” and well, they worked a treat.  Not to mention there’s a poop load of home renovation shows on tv every night!  I kid you not – loads of them! Anyway, I decided on some fun hexagonal tiles for the floor and a herringbone pattern for the wall.

Once we’d decided we were happy with our choice it was time to rip it all out … not going to lie … what a freaking dusty mess that was but it wasn’t hard and didn’t take too long.  Truth be told Clayton did it while I just tidied up after him.

We began with the floor – obvious choice, right?  The tiles came on a kind of netting that helped keep them neat and well spaced when Clayton laid them, which was great. Once the floor was finished we chose the back wall (behind the where the loo would go) for the herringbone tiles … it’s a boring kind of room so we were hoping to add a little bit of something extra but didn’t want too much … I wasn’t after a public restroom kinda vibe.

The herringbone tiles also came on a netting so they were also easier to lay – thank goodness!

We didn’t really need a new toilet … but hey, like I said, it wasn’t originally our house so a nice new toilet freshened everything up!

I’d never really thought about a black toilet before and I’ve gotta admit, I’ve never actually seen one but I figured the room was very “white” and needed something to funk it up a bit  so decided to check with good old Google and well, there they were!   Clayton wasn’t entirely convinced … nor were a lot of people actually, but let’s not kid ourselves … who’s the boss?  Am I right?  Anyway, we went with the black lavatory and I am so glad we did because we were both thrilled!  We are seriously LOVING our black loo!  It looks so sleek and perfect in there, especially with the black toilet roll holder!  By the way, you can get black toilet paper but hooley dooley, it’s expensive so we’re sticking with the white.

So, this is it … our end result!  And I couldn’t be happier … not only with the look but also the price!  It’s amazing how much you can save having a go yourself!!

A few pops of green with some faux plants, and wallah … all done!

A side by side with our “before” and “after”.

Fat & Frumpy! Anyone else feeling it?

Okay …. so here goes!  I need a lifestyle change.  There I said it … and this time I mean it!

I don’t want to be fat, frumpy and 40 … surely no one does!  There’s nothing I can do about the 40 but the fat and frumpy can take a hike!

I’m putting this out there because I truly believe accountability is massive when it comes to things like this.  If I put it out there … even if no one actually cares … then I can’t allow myself to fail because, well, it’s out there.  I won’t allow myself to fail.

If anyone else wants to join me on this lifestyle change … I’m not going to call it a diet because diets are temporary and I want this to be permanent … then shout out and we can do it together.  Keep each other up to date on how we’re going and what we’re doing each week.  Update with great snacks, exercises, and even weight / size losses or gains!  Fingers crossed it’s losses!!!

I’m not sure why but I have to start this process on Monday.  It’s like the start of a new week … the start of a new month … the start of a new season … so why not the start of a new ME!

Four years ago I lost a bucket load of weight … I was 55kg and felt amazing!  I’m horrified to admit this but I’m now a whopping 69kg … I feel complete dread and shame writing that but if I’m going to do this I need to be honest and accountable!  It’s the heaviest I have ever been in my whole life (aside from when I was pregnant with the twins) and I am appalled at myself for allowing this to gradually sneak up on me!  And let’s face it, that’s what happens!  The weight slowly piles on and the next thing you know you’re feeling fat and frumpy!

I don’t want to feel ugly and embarrassed anymore, which is why I’ve decided to step it up … quit snacking on the Furry Friends and Milo and move onto the roasted pumpkin seeds and celery!  I know I can do this … I’ve done it before.

I truly, wholeheartedly believe it’s all about willpower and self control.  Shakes and pills aren’t for me … I choose to change my lifestyle.  Go from fatty snacks to healthy ones.  Exercise regularly and stop making excuses!

Get ready for the start of a new body … just in time for Summer!  Let’s do this!  POW!!!

Junk Food

It’s all about priorities!

Ever been jealous of that friend who always seems to be travelling … you know, the one out seeing the world while you’re stuck at home with the kids!  Yep, me too!  That’s why I decided to be that friend … the one out travelling … the one seeing the world!  And here’s how you can do it too!

Sky Bridge
Matt, Ben & I in 2011 on the Sky Bridge of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Having read the title of this post you should already have the gist of what this blog is about … but I’ll assume you’re not that bright … especially if you’re the one living vicariously through everyone else’s travels!!!

Seriously though, it’s true!  It’s all about priorities!  If you want to see the world, and I mean not just through your friend’s Facebook and Instagram posts, then you have to prioritise.

I’m not going to pretend it’ll be easy … it likely won’t be … unless you’re already loaded … in which case I’m wondering if you’re just a dumb ass / tight ass with lots of money!?!

Dubai
Fujairah Fort in the United Arab Emirates in 2016.

Anyway, I truly believe that travelling the world is possible for everyone.  It’ll take hard work, good planning and some cutting back in areas … but more than anything it’ll take you prioritising what you want more.  If you’re not prepared to give up things in order to save up enough to travel then clearly travelling isn’t really a priority for you.

I’m being honest here … I’d give up pretty much anything to travel the world … except the kids … and sometimes I’d probably give them up too!  Just jokes … don’t tell them I said that!!!  For real though, I’d give up eating out / takeaway food, the movies, clothes shopping, Foxtel … the list goes on!  There’s plenty of ways you can save money here and there.

I’ll let you in on a little money saving technique we’ve adopted that really helps out too.  We NEVER … and I mean NEVER spend a $5 note.  We use coins and every other note but NEVER a $5.  (Notice how I’ve made NEVER be bold every time I’ve written it … that’s how important it is to us!) If I fancy a hot chocolate and it’s going to cost $4.50 I’ll pay with a $10, even if I have a $5.  And that’ll usually score me an additional $5 in change too.  POW!!!

And if I only have $5 notes I won’t buy anything!  My priority is to save $5 notes.

Holiday spending money right here!  POW!!!

And our reason for saving all these $5 notes … they’re our holiday spending money!!!  Without exaggeration we’ve not spent a $5 in close to 2 years!  And boy, oh boy, does it add up FAST!

You want to be the one your friends are envious of?  Then start by prioritising what you want most.

IMG_0439.JPG
Matt and Ben living it up Samoa style in 2012.

Do you really want that new dress / jacket / top / jeans?  Or would you prefer the holiday?  If it’s the holiday then put aside the money you were going to spend on the clothes and put it in the container with all the $5 notes you’ve surreptitiously collected!

Actually say NO to your kids when they want something!  Explain to them that if they want the holiday then they’ll also have to contribute … and by contribute I don’t mean financially!  They can learn to forgo things too.

Family trip to Thailand in 2015.

We’re currently planning our next family adventure and we’re hoping for Africa.

Yep, AFRICA!!!  It sure as hell ain’t going to be cheap! The kids want it to happen soooo much though that they’ve actually asked us to stop paying them pocket money because they want to help make it easier for us to save!  Talk about proud momma moment!

Basically, I guess what I’m saying is that you don’t have to have a lot of money to travel.  I’m not going to lie … Yeah, it helps … it helps a lot … but it’s all about prioritising.

Best way to start … get saving those $5 and start small.  Choose somewhere close to home!

And holla if you’d like some help … that’s what friends are for … right!

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me on my new blogging adventure.

IMG_2540 2

I’m looking forward to sharing my journey through life with anyone remotely interested.  I guess I’ve decided that now, at my age, I have enough life experience to share some snippets of my life.

I’m looking forward to taking this authentic journey with you … through all the fabulous moments, and even the not so fabulous moments.

Remember, there is always joy to be found in each and every day … never forget to seek out the small wonders of life and try not to get too caught up in work and money!

I’m just a full time mum / step mum and I’d  like to share a little of the world from my perspective.  I have a complete joy and gratitude for life, and hope to spread a little love and inspiration.

You should never regret anything in life.  If it’s good, it’s wonderful.  If it’s bad, it’s experience.
